The hottest new musical in town is HAIRSPRAY. It is based on John Waters hilarious 1988 film comedy,which starred Ricki Lake. This feel good musical, playing at The Neil Simon Theatre, takes place in Baltimore in 1962 and follows the story of young Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, who has only one passion‹to dance on the local TV dance program The Corny Collins Show. Well she wins a spot on the show and overnight is transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Playing Tracy is the dynamic newcomer Marissa Jaret Winokur, and as her irresistible stage mother Edna, the role made famous in the film by the late great Divine, itıs non other then three time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Matthew Morrison is love interest Link Larkin, Kerry Butler plays Tracyıs best friend Penny Pingleton who falls in love with Seaweed played by Corey Reynolds, Clarke Thorell is Corny Collins and Mary Bond Davis is Motormouth Maybelle. Tracyıs rival Amber Von Tussle is played to evil perfection by Laura Bell Bundy, and her mother Velma Von Tussle is the multi talented Linda Hart. HAIRSPRAY has a book by Mark OıDonnell and Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan, music by Mark Shaiman and lyrics by Mr. Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The musical is choreographed by Jerry Mitchell and directed by Jack OıBrien, the same team that gave us last seasonıs hit THE FULL MONTY. We caught up the cast and creative at their opening night celebration at Roseland where Ricki Lake, Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick joined in the festivities.
